Brooklinn Khoury was attacked by a dog a little more than one year ago which left her with a disfigured upper lip and nose.
As a skateboarder, looks can be a huge factor. Especially as an Instagram influencer, Khoury always needed to look her best. Now, she's come to an entirely new understanding of what beauty is.
“Beauty is so prescribed in so many ways,” Khoury told BuzzFeed News. “I don’t want to go on social media and feel like I’m not a whole person, looks-wise.”
Despite her issues with IG, she still needs to rely on it for income. In fact, IG has helped her get sponsorships, including one with DC shoes. She even got a spot on their skateboarding team.
Khoury was hospitalized for three days after the accident. Her then-agent asked her if she could still do the shoot, and Khoury said no. She began to document her road to recovery on Youtube. Fans loved her vulnerabiliy.
Khoury knows that she will never look as she used to. Despite that, she's used her traumatic event to create a healing community through her social media channels.
